Gloriously absurd, Borbulha (Pimple) throws everything it can to shock and surprise its audience. Director Fernando Alle has made a terrific four-minute short that revels in its body horror.
A young boy is having a difficult time in life; getting through school as a young adolescent is hard, but having a pimple the size of Pluto on your forehead makes it harder. So when a trio of bullies see said planetoid-sized pimple, they make the mistake of prodding the young boy once too many times.
Fernando Alle really had a list of moments he wanted in his short film Borbulha, and instead of just focusing on one, he decided that he had to do all of them tremendously well. We get horrible gross-out moments you would imagine from a film about a pimple that you just knew wasn’t going to last the film without being popped. But more importantly, we get scenes that escalate to an insane degree. We should not expect what happens after the pimple is burst onto one of the bullies, or what each resulting moment is. It’s crazy. But perfectly and wonderfully so.
The fact that Alle is not afraid to give us every practical technique under the sun here in Borbulha is what will delight audiences the most. We have some fantastic stop motion body horror here that is done extremely well; it works in freaking out the audience as much as the characters. It’s delightfully gross from beginning to end, with you rapt at what could come next. Luckily for us, Borbulha is a film that will just throw something else at us. After all, three bullies need to learn a very stern lesson.
Just when you think you have seen it all in 222 seconds, we then get a giant puss monster who is wonderfully open to giving pep talks and not judging one’s sexual preferences. There is not a second of Fernando Alle’s film where you are not having fun, or gasping at something that truly catches you off guard.
The fact that Alle finds time to add in that pep talk for anyone who has acne is such a fun idea. Puberty is the worst, but it’s not so bad when you have giant yellow puss monsters out there to protect and boost your confidence.
Borbulha is a perfect little short that shows its love for practical effects, stop motion, and just being as silly as possible. Watch this one if you can; it is a joyful riot of a film.
