Oscar 2021 Breakdown

Oscar 2021 Breakdown

It’s over, it is finally over, thank goodness! Awards season is over for another few days, There were a few surprises for me this year in the winners, but generally everything went as it should. Let’s have a gander to see who won what.

Oscars 2021: 'Nomadland' Wins Best Picture as Hollywood Looks to Turn a Corner - WSJ

Best Picture

The Father, Judas and the Black Messiah, Mank, Minari, Nomadland, Promising Young Woman, Sound of Metal, The Trial of the Chicago 7

Predicted – Nomadland

Winner – Nomadland

My Score 1/1

There was never going to be another option here, it was so long in the front that it was a bygone conclusion.

Best Actor

Riz Ahmed (Sound of Metal), Chadwick Boseman (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom), Anthony Hopkins (The Father), Gary Oldman (Mank), Steven Yeun (Minari)

Predicted – Chadwick Boseman

Winner – Anthony Hopkins

My Score 1/2

As I had said in the predictions, this shouldn’t have come to a big surprise, the only surprise was due to the producers obviously thinking Boseman was going to win. Hopkins deserves this win, it was the stronger performance, but yeez, the Academy did not help themselves here.

Best Actress

Viola Davis (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom), Andra Day (The United States Vs. Billie Holliday), Vanessa Kirby (Pieces of A Woman), Frances McDormand (Nomadland), Carey Mulligan (Promising Young Woman)

Predicted – Carey Mulligan

Winner – Frances McDormand

My Score 1/3

I had said that for the longest time McDormand was the front runner, I had foolishly assumed she had lost the momentum, apparently not. This was the one true surprise all night. I just never thought they would go for her considering all of the other performances were that much better.

Oscars 2021: From Daniel Kaluuya to Chloe Zhao, a complete list of winners | Hindustan Times

Best Supporting Actor

Sacha Baron Cohen (The Trial of the Chicago 7), Daniel Kaluuya (Judas and the Black Messiah), Leslie Odom, Jr. (One Night in Miami), Paul Raci (Sound of Metal), Lakeith Stanfield (Judas and the Black Messiah)

Predicted – Daniel Kaluuya

Winner – Daniel Kaluuya

My Score 2/4

Kaluuya had this the minute Judas and the Black Messiah was released and it was good to see them follow through with it. What a speech by the way.

Best Supporting Actress

Maria Bakalova (Borat Subsequent MovieFilm), Glenn Close (Hillbilly Elegy), Olivia Colman (The Father), Amanda Seyfried (Mank), Youn Yuh-Jung (Minari)

Predicted – Youn Yuh-Jung

Winner – Youn Yuh-Jung

My Score 3/5

She did it! Such relief that Minari got something from the night as it deserved to win something. Glenn Close didn’t win for that performance, so I am even happier.

Best Director

Another Round (Thomas Vinderberg), Mank (David Fincher), Minari (Lee Isaac Chung), Nomadland (Chloe Zhao), Promising Young Woman (Emerald Fennell)

Predicted – Chloe Zhao

Winner – Chloe Zhao

My Score 4/6

I mean did anyone really have anyone else in their pools? Zhao makes history and for a couple of hours the Academy got to look good.

Sound Of Metal' Editor Mikkel E.G. Nielsen Wins Home Editing Oscar; Amazon Movie Takes Second Award

Best Film Editing

The Father, Nomadland, Promising Young Woman, Sound of Metal, The Trial of the Chicago 7

Predicted – The Trail of the Chicago 7

Winner – The Sound of Metal

My Score 4/7

A happy surprise, as I had thought the Academy wanted to spread out the love, I didn’t think they would be so good as to give The Sound of Metal this. It is still a well deserved win though.

Best Original Screenplay

Judas and the Black Messiah, Minari, Promising Young Woman, Sound of Metal, The Trail of the Chicago 7

Predicted – Promising Young Woman

Winner – Promising Young Woman

My Score 5/8

As expected Promising Young Woman was going to win something, though I never expected it to do as well as others had heavily pushed for. This is a great win though and with such a killer script as it had, a well deserved one.

Best Adapted Screenplay

Borat: Subsequent MovieFilm, The Father, Nomadland, One Night in Miami, The White Tiger

Predicted – The Father

Winner – The Father

My Score 6/9

The strongest nominee wins, strange how rarely that happens… Anyway, The Father had the best screenplay from this group and got the glory.

Denmark Toasts 'Another Round' Oscar | Hollywood Reporter

Best International Feature

Another Round, Better Days, Collective, The Man Who Sold His Skin, Quo Vadis, Aida?

Predicted – Another Round

Winner – Another Round

My Score 7/10

Never a chance anything else was going to win here, with that speech as well, I am so glad it won.

Best Cinematography

Judas and the Black Messiah, Mank, News of the World, Nomadland, The Trial of the Chicago 7

Predicted – Nomadland

Winner – Mank

My Score 7/11

I didn’t see Mank winning here, but it is still a good win as the film did look terrific.

Best Production Design

The Father, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Mank, News of the World, Tenet

Predicted – Mank

Winner – Mank

My Score 8/12

Mank gets two! This was the certain one though and while it bleeds Hollywood clapping itself on the back, it did have some great production design.

Best Sound

Greyhound, Mank, News of the World, Soul, Sound of Metal

Predicted – Sound of Metal

Winner – Sound of Metal

My Score 9/13

They didn’t mess up! So congrats on that one lads and ladies, and happily not the only win of the night for Sound of Metal.

Costume designer Ann Roth works with Taylour Paige on the set of "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom."

Best Costume Design

Emma, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Mank, Mulan, Pinocchio

Predicted – Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom

Winner – Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom

My Score 10/14

A very well earned win and an important one as well to help break away from the monotony of Victorian costume drama wins.

Best Original Score

Da 5 Bloods, Mank, Minari, News of the World, Soul

Predicted – Soul

Winner – Soul

My Score 11/15

Soul was never going to lose here and ticked off an easy pick.

Best Original Song

Fight For You (Judas and the Black Messiah), Hear My Voice (The Trial of the Chicago 7), Husavik (Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga), Io Si (The Life Ahead), Speak Now (One Night in Miami)

Predicted – Speak Now

Winner – Fight For You

My Score 11/16

I didn’t see this one coming at all as I was for sure thinking it was Speak Now taking the Oscar.

Best Documentary Feature

Collective, Crip Camp, The Mole Agent, My Octopus Teacher, Time

Predicted – My Octopus Teacher

Winner – My Octopus Teacher

My Score 12/17

We knew it was going to win, it won. I guess they needed a feel good type film? I dunno, I preferred all of the other nominees ahead of it. Proof that ease of access and marketing is always helpful to the Academy.

Soul' Director Pete Docter & Producer Dana Murray Pay Tribute To Music Teachers & Jazz Musicians After Animated Oscars Win

Best Animated Feature

Onward, Over the Moon, A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon, Soul, Wolfwalkers

Predicted – Soul

Winner – Soul

My Score 13/18

Nooo, poor Wolfwalkers! Soul had the win, another that we knew it did and would always win. A good film, but perhaps not the most deserving.

Best Visual Effects

Love and Monsters, The Midnight Sky, Mulan, The One and Only Ivan, Tenet

Predicted – Tenet

Winner – Tenet

My Score 14/19

The favourite won! See a theme here folks, the length of this season I feel really hurt it and stopped any true unpredictability to come across.

Best Makeup and Hairstyling

Emma, Hillbilly Elegy, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Mank, Pinocchio

Predicted – Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom

Winner – Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom

My Score 15/20

Hillybilly Elegy’s got nothing, nothing! I for one have never been happier. Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom got what it deserved and thank goodness it did.

How we made Colette: 'We wanted to give witness to what she had held inside' | Colette | The Guardian

Best Documentary Short Subject

Colette, A Concerto is a Conversation, Do Not Split, Hunger Ward, A Love Song For Latasha

Predicted – Colette

Winner – Colette

My Score 16/21

I almost had this switched out, but stuck with it and hurrah that I did. A solid win here.

Best Animated Short

Burrow, Genius Loci, If Anything Happens I Love You, Opera, Yes-People

Predicted – If Anything Happens I Love You

Winner – If Anything Happens I Love You

My Score 17/22

Opera didn’t pip it at the end and If Anything Happens I Love You got its well deserved win, this is a film that really breaks you as you realise the intents. I great short and while it had the most open platform and marketing, it earned it.

Best Live Action Short

Feeling Through, The Letter Room, The Present, Two Distant Strangers, White Eye

Predicted – Two Distant Strangers

Winner – Two Distant Strangers

My Score 18/23

Generally it is safe to go with the favourite and I did here with the shorts, this was the popular and timely choice and it was difficult to see anything else get passed it.

I am but a small website in this big wide world. As much as I would love to make this website a big and wonderful entity. That would bring in more costs. So, for now all I hope is to make Upcoming On Screen self sufficient. Well enough to where any website fees are less of a worry for me in the future. You can support the website below…

You can support us in a variety of ways (other than that wonderful word of mouth) and those lovely follows. If you are so inclined to help out then you can support us via Patreon, find our link here! We don’t want to ask much from you, so for now we have limited our tiers to £1.50 and £3.50. These will of course grow the more we plan to do here at Upcoming On Screen.

Thanks for reading, every view helps us out more than you would think (we have fragile egos). Until next time.
