Cammy and Mike – ★★★★ HollyShorts London 2024

Cammy and Mike – ★★★★ HollyShorts London 2024

A fantastic first glimpse into two characters that we will hopefully see a lot more of down the line, Cammy and Mike is an instant success for co-directors Rob McIlhenney and William Groebe.

Cammy and Mike are two of the cutest robots you will see on this side of Wall-E. They just so happen to be on a mission from space to document what life there is on planet Earth. Wandering around an animal sanctuary documenting the creatures they encounter, they soon realise that their mission will be much bigger than they could ever have imagined.

Cammy and Mike are more of a short pilot than a short film in the sense that it is explicitly obvious that we are at the start of a long adventure for our two little robots. As a pilot/teaser for what is to come, it’s not just good, it’s captivating. You are drawn into the world of the duo, and in just 8 minutes, we are given enough moments to not only care about them but also like them.

Taking on roles akin to those of nature documentarians in that they are not meant to interfere with what they are documenting for their home planet, the duo does their best to record only images and sounds of the animals that they encounter. That is until they meet a wolf pup that they accidentally let out of its cave, leading it to get lost and its parent to be thoroughly upset. So, to correct their error, they go off to bring it back home.

It’s such a simple concept that you could make a series out of Cammy and Mike just taking a stroll around the animal sanctuary for multiple episodes, and the audience would not mind a jot. Seeing aliens, even if it is robots, interact with anything but humans is honestly quite refreshing. For example, they would rightfully be scared witless at interacting with a giant brown bear as it approaches and growls at you. They would be perplexed by a sloth and how little it moves and makes a sound. Honestly, it was one of those little shorts that you could just watch for an age as they explore this weird world.

Now, when it comes to the actual characters of Cammy and Mike, this is where the short shines brightest; you really are invested in them. Keeping the comedic tone throughout with them is what works best, so when they are trying to record things, it is quite entertaining. Little moments like being one of our guys afraid to turn on the mic to record the bear so the other turns them and themselves on to begin their documentation are fun. Most certainly, this will be a hit with children as it has that Saturday morning animation feel about it, which is never a bad thing.

Whether the makers of Cammy and Mike (which seems to be a crowd-sourced concept from the company Adim) have enough ideas to create a fully-fledged series of shorts remains to be seen. However, from this opening glimpse of the characters, it’s clear that there’s a wealth of potential for a series. This potential leaves the future hopeful and optimistic for Cammy and Mike as it certainly feels like a sure fire winner.

I am but a small website in this big wide world. As much as I would love to make this website a big and wonderful entity. That would bring in more costs. So, for now, all I hope is to make Upcoming On Screen self-sufficient. Well, enough to make any website fees less of a worry for me in the future. You can support the website below…
